Recommendation: The Steelseries 9HD (the larger version of the 4HD) allows your mouse to track better than ever.  It’s a great surface for a balance of speed and control, and it’s also reasonably priced.

Specifications:

  • Material: Hard plastic
  • Size: 10.7 x 12.7 x 0.08 in. (270 x 320 x 2 mm)
  • Works with: All mice

What we liked:

  • Good balance of speed and control
  • Good durability
  • Easy to clean
  • Large enough for most uses
  • Priced nicely for a good hard-surface pad

What we disliked:

  • Doesn’t clean itself?

The Steelseries 9HD was designed to replace the Steelseries 4D, and is identical to the 4HD except larger.  When we reviewed the old version, we listed several mice that did not work with the pad, but we are pleased to announce that the 9/4HD has fixed the problem, and all mice now seem to track correctly on the surface.  In fact, the improved tracking on the surface seems to be the only change aside from having two sizes. Not only do the mice that didn’t work in the past track well on the 9HD, but they track superbly well.  There’s nothing too surprising about the surface – it’s not too rough, and not too smooth.  It’s not made cheaply, and it’s not too expensive.  I believe this is the mouse pad made for Goldilocks.  Just keep in mind that the 9L is quite large. (see the specs above)

While I prefer the surface of the SteelSeries 5L, the 9HD and 4HD have a great surface that any real gamer could enjoy. If you want just a good all-around pad, get the SteelSeries 4HD here. If you want the larger version, you should get the SteelSeries 9HD.  If you want to see more pads and surfaces, go back to the mouse pad intro and summary page.
